I'm guessing their sound is very coherent, with huge dynamic ability. I'm sure that clean, very high SPL's is where they excel, and they probably really need a truck load of LF elements to round out the bottom for most music.
For home use, with music, I think they're fine without subs. I may not be as demanding as some are, Though. I haven't actually listened to my 9864 for awhile now, either.

Sometimes, especially with Altecs, they do what they do so well that we don't readily notice the things they don't do, or the things they don't do become only marginally relevant.
But, my own personal nit is that if it won't do an F3 at least as low as 41hz, it's not a full range system, again that's just my own personal opinion.
i'm a big fan of that bottom octave, much lower than 41hz. after looking at the response chart and stated frequency response, i'm pretty sure i'd need some VLF augmentation in order to live with them long term.

Doing what they do so well, may be the case. Also, I typically have some sort of vintage home speaker hooked up that doesn't go too low either, so I'm used to it. Probably the best bass reproducers I've had were a pair of JBL L110A, but they needed to be re-foamed, plus other flaws so I parted them out.
Currently, I've got Jensen Triettes (TR-10U), that are quite bass shy.

I wonder if crossovers are included?
BTW, checked the new price and came up with $1995 each in the early 90's.

Cross overs were supposed to be electronic. I got a M500 crossover in my 9864, Though.
Re: anybody near sarasota Fl?
Wow, I hadn't done the math yet, on this auction. At the opening bid of $2000, and 19 units, that's only a bit over $100 each!
Re: anybody near sarasota Fl?
I'm in for a group buy. If the drivers can be used for a reasonable home size install...

I wouldn't pull the drivers out of the factory boxes, unless maybe I found/built an 816VI. They're already smaller than a A7. I'm not sure how they've compare to the boxes that you might find a 604 installed into.
I would love to be part of a group buy, but I'm not in a position to do so, unfortunately.......... I can barely afford to pay attention :-P
